1. The Spirit of Wist
Wist is built around boards — communities formed around shared interests. We want those communities to feel like real places: ones where conversation is worth having and people are treated like people. Moderation exists to protect that, not to police thought.
Most content is fine. These guidelines exist for the edge cases that make things worse for everyone else.
2. What Is Not Allowed
Content that is never permitted
- Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) — any sexual content involving minors. Reports are forwarded to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and relevant law enforcement immediately.
- Credible threats of violence — content that threatens specific harm to an identifiable person or group
- Doxxing — posting someone's private information (home address, phone number, workplace, etc.) without their consent, with intent to harm or harass
- Illegal content — content that violates applicable law, including facilitating drug sales, human trafficking, or fraud
Content that violates community standards
- Harassment — targeted, repeated, or coordinated behaviour intended to distress, intimidate, or silence another user
- Hate speech — content that dehumanises people based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin
- Impersonation — pretending to be another person, a public figure, or Wist staff
- Spam — repeated identical or near-identical posts, unsolicited promotions, or coordinated inauthentic behaviour
- Unmarked NSFW content — sexually explicit or graphically violent content posted without the NSFW flag. This is a violation even if the content would otherwise be permitted.
- Ban evasion — creating a new account after being suspended or banned
NSFW content
Sexually explicit or graphically violent content is permitted on Wist with conditions:
- It must be posted with the NSFW flag enabled
- It must be posted in a board that is marked NSFW by its creator or an admin
- It must comply with all applicable laws — no CSAM under any circumstances
- It must not target or involve real, identifiable individuals without their documented consent
NSFW content posted without the flag, or in non-NSFW boards, will be removed and may result in account action.
3. Board Creator Responsibilities
If you create a board, you take on a moderation responsibility for that community. Board creators are expected to:
- Set clear expectations for their board in the board description
- Mark the board as NSFW if NSFW content is permitted there
- Not use their board to organise harassment of users inside or outside Wist
Wist admins may remove any board that violates these guidelines, regardless of creator status.
4. How to Report Content
Every post and comment has a ⋯ menu that includes a report option. Tap it to flag content for review. Your report is anonymous — the reported user will not know who filed it.
You can also block a user directly from their profile or from the ⋯ menu on their content. Blocked users cannot see your content and their content will not appear in your feed.
For urgent reports (threats of imminent violence, CSAM), email wist@wistapps.com directly — do not rely solely on the in-app report for time-sensitive situations.
5. How We Review Reports
Reports are reviewed by Wist admins. We evaluate reported content against these guidelines and our Terms of Service. We aim to review reports within 48 hours. High-severity reports (CSAM, credible threats) are prioritised and actioned immediately upon discovery.
We do not share details of moderation reviews with the reporting user beyond confirming that action was or was not taken.
6. Enforcement Actions
Depending on the severity and frequency of violations, we may take any of the following actions:
- Content removal — the specific post or comment is deleted
- NSFW flag applied — content is marked NSFW by an admin if it was posted without the flag
- Warning — a notice sent to the account that a violation was found
- Temporary suspension — account access restricted for a defined period
- Permanent ban — account permanently disabled; applies to severe or repeated violations
Violations involving CSAM or credible threats of violence result in immediate permanent ban and referral to law enforcement or NCMEC without prior warning.
7. Appeals
If you believe a moderation action was taken in error, you may appeal by emailing wist@wistapps.com with the subject line "Moderation Appeal" and a description of the situation. We will review appeals within 5 business days.
Appeals are not available for permanent bans issued for CSAM or credible threats of violence.
8. Changes to These Guidelines
We may update these guidelines as the community grows. We will announce material changes via in-app notice. Your continued use of Wist after the effective date of any update constitutes acceptance of the revised guidelines.
